How did it start?
International Women’s Day has its historical origins in the workers’ movement and has now become an annual holiday recognized by the United Nations.
The beginning of its celebration in Europe is 1908. At the time, 15,000 women protested in New York City for shorter working hours, better pay, and women’s suffrage.
A year later, the Socialist Party of America proclaimed the first National Women’s Day.
The idea to make the day international came from an individual named Clara Zetkin.
She raised the idea at the 1910 International Conference of Women Workers in Copenhagen, Denmark.
At that time, 100 women from 17 countries participated and they completely agreed with her idea.
It was celebrated for the first time in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland by the Europeans in 1911.
It started to be officially celebrated at the international level in 1975, when the United Nations began to celebrate its anniversary in Europe.
For the first time, “Honoring the Past; It was celebrated internationally in 1996 with the slogan “Planning the Future” by the United Nations.
International Women’s Day commemorates the legacy of women who resisted the oppression of the society and gained in politics and economy.
Her celebration is rooted in political violence, and she is commemorated in various demonstrations and awareness-raising activities to redress the imbalance of gender power in the world today.
