In the region, more than 18 million quintals of crops were harvested from summer irrigation.

It has been announced that the central region of Ethiopia has harvested more than 18 million quintals of the 80,474 hectares of land irrigated this year.

Melaku Bafa, deputy head of the regional agriculture bureau and head of the agricultural development sector, said that it is planned to produce 28 million 294 thousand 892 quintals of crops by covering 117 thousand 494 hectares with various vegetables through regular irrigation.

With this, he mentioned that he has been able to cultivate more than 106 thousand hectares of various vegetables and indicated that he has been able to harvest 18 million 398 thousand 410 quintals of the 80 thousand 474 hectares of land available for production.

He pointed out that the farmers are benefiting by using water alternatives to produce two or three times a year, and he said that the results were seen due to the focus on tomatoes, onions and cabbage as well as fruits.

He also said that it is planned to cultivate 11 thousand 230 hectares of land under summer irrigation wheat and 2 thousand 600 hectares of land have been covered with seeds and harvesting has started.

The deputy chief said that continuous support is being given to farmers by providing them with various inputs and making them use agricultural technologies.

He said that the work started in irrigation development is playing a significant role in stabilizing the cost of living by increasing the production.

In relation to this, he stated that the youth are being engaged in the field of agriculture using the alternative of water and that they are becoming successful in integrated farming, Lemat’s heritage, vegetables and fruits and in various fields.

He said that irrigation development has increased the production capacity of the farmers and has improved the culture of using water alternatives, thus improving the livelihood of the farmers and playing an important role in economic development.
